Craven County (population 102,578) is seeking an experienced, energetic and creative Economic Development Director to come to a thriving Southern community where historic charm, modern urbanism and economic development have combined to create growth opportunities. Strong candidates will have a portfolio of successful economic development initiatives, be entrepreneurial, tech savvy and creative in using strategies that promote the County’s assets while looking for ways to overcome challenges. The County is also looking for a candidate who can partner with community stakeholders to develop innovative strategies that produce new initiatives.
About the Organization and Position:
The Craven County Economic Development Department was created in 2012. Craven County has an overall FY19 general fund budget of approximately $104.4 million. The County has 27 departments employing 605 FT and 98 PT employees. The County maintains A1 (Moody) and AA ratings (Standard and Poor) and has issued a GFOA award winning budget for the last 21 years. Reporting to the Assistant County Manager, the Economic Development Director will focus on strategic County priority areas; apply outstanding research and analytical skills along with sophisticated marketing skills to identify and leverage a wide spectrum of economic development opportunities; expand the work development prospects for citizens without college degrees; promote niche manufacturing opportunities that complement existing aerospace, sciences and pharmaceutical industries; work with Craven Community College on matching their curriculum to strong wage jobs; and use technology to develop a robust website that attracts the interest of and supplies the desired data for prospects. A strong partnership exists between the military, local and regional governments and Craven County. Refreshing and updating the strategic plan will be an important priority of the next Director. The new Director will be tasked with carrying out strategic initiatives
established for 2015-2019.
Qualifications: Requires any combination of a bachelor’s degree in business, economics, planning, or a related field from an accredited University or College with five years of professional and progressive leadership experience in economic development including five years of successful economic development management in a comparably sized and progressive local government. A master's degree and CEcD certification is preferred. The hiring range is $85,881-96,591 with salary offered commensurate with qualifications and in accordance with midpoint and market.
