Since March 1998 Gene has served as the President of the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC). SEDC is a professional association for economic development practitioners and serves 17 states in the American South. In the role of President Gene is responsible for overall operations of the association and for the implementation of the association’s annual program of work.

In the twelve years prior to joining SEDC Gene served as the chief staff member of three Chamber of Commerce/Economic Development organizations in Tennessee and Georgia. Gene is a graduate of The University of Tennessee, the Economic Development Institute, and the US Chamber’s Institute for Organizational Management. In April, 1993 he earned the designation of Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) from the American Economic Development Council. In May, 2002 he also received the designation of Certified Association Executive (CAE) from the American Society of Association Executives. He also received the Professional Community &Economic Developer (PCED) certification from the Community Development Council in 2007.He also has been elected to the board of the Georgia Society of Association Executives for 2011 and 2012. In addition, he serves as the Treasurer of the Community Development Council, the national certification body for the Professional Community & Economic Developer certification.

Matthew Darius has joined SEDC as its new Operations Manager, effective February 1.  He comes to SEDC from the New York State Association of School Business Officials where he served first as the Senior Staff Associate and then the Coordinator for Professional Development. 

“Matthew’s previous association management and meeting planning experience will be a great asset to SEDC,” President Gene Stinson said. “He has extensive experience in the key responsibilities of our operations manager, not only in planning meetings, but coordinating speaker logistics and all aspects of the myriad details that go into producing successful events.”

With a background that includes managing programming budgets, administering online content and services, and maintaining a statewide certification program among other responsibilities, SEDC’s new operations manager is well-equipped to deliver member services, a crucial component of his role.

“Matthew gained excellent experience in member services as professional development coordinator in his previous position,” Stinson noted. “His interest in taking care of members fits well with the SEDC commitment to customer service.” 

Erica Martin

Erica Martin is the Administrative Assistant at the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC). Erica began work at SEDC October 2015.

Erica worked over five years in fashion merchandising, marketing, and sales on both the corporate side at Nordstrom in Atlanta, GA and the small business side at Poor Little Rich Girl in College Park, GA, ending this portion of her career as Designer Specialist at Nordstrom.

Erica decided to pursue administrative work in 2010 at SZI Group, a property management company in Atlanta, GA. Since then she has worked in administrative roles at Hammond Residential, BHG Leasing, Sunshine Property Management, and currently the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC) in Atlanta, GA.

 Erica received her B.S. in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design and her Minor in Marketing at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. Her hobbies include traveling, thrifting, cooking, and any type of D.I.Y. project. Erica is an Atlanta native and lives in the Atlanta metro area with her fiancé and their son.
