Mecklenburg County is located in the heart of the Southeast, comprising seven (7) municipalities: the City of Charlotte and the Towns of Matthews, Pineville, Mint Hill, Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville, within the southern Piedmont area of North Carolina along the state’s border with South Carolina. The Economic Development Director is responsible for the overall operation of the County’s Economic Development Office, with an operating budget of $11.97 million, primarily in incentive grants.  This role will lead, plan, organize, manage, coordinate, direct, and implement programs and projects that support the attraction and retention of domestic and international businesses; the development of public facilities and infrastructure; workforce development; and/or other economic development, redevelopment or capital improvement programs or projects. The successful Candidate will bring demonstrated experience to the continuous effort toward innovative approaches and operational improvement.


Mecklenburg County is a County/Commission form of government with the County Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer, managing the daily affairs of the county departments with its 5,390 full-time employees and $1.53 billion operating budget.  The Economic Development Director reports to the Assistant County Manager for Sustainable Communities.


The successful Candidate will have experience developing successful public/private partnerships to facilitate major community development and redevelopment projects.  He/she must have solid knowledge of Best Practices in economic development principles. This includes a working knowledge of business start-ups, entrepreneurships and venture capital.  In addition, this role is expected to have experience with tax-exempt and taxable bond transactions. 


The new Director should possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economic Development, Finance or a related area from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five (5) years of economic development experience with 7 – 10 years of demonstrated leadership success preferred.  A graduate degree is highly desirable, but can be supplemented by graduate level coursework and previous related work experience.  A Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) or similar certification is required within 2 years of hire.


A starting salary ranging from the low-$100,000s, to mid-$100,000s is currently available for the Director’s position depending on experience. Generous benefits are available including medical, dental, vision care, flexible spending accounts, short- and long-term disability as well as basic and supplemental term life insurance.  In addition, the selected candidate will be automatically enrolled into the North Carolina Local Government Retirement System upon their employment.  In addition, there is optional participation in one of two deferred compensation plans, a 457 Plan or 401(k) Plan, with a 5% match from the County.
