Economic Development Director

Junction City/Geary County Kansas

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking an economic development director. Centrally located on I-70 in the heart of the Flint Hills, Junction City, Kansas is just two hours from Kansas City and fifteen minutes from a regional airport. The western gateway of the emerging animal health corridor, Junction City, is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. The community has a diverse population and a rich historical and cultural background. From its ornate limestone downtown, to its old west lore and abundant natural resources, Junction City has a lot to offer. The town’s history and diversity comes in part from its close proximity to Fort Riley, home of the Army’s First Infantry Division.

Junction City is the largest town in Geary County with all areas being no more than a 15-minute drive. The population of Junction City is approximately 25,000 with an additional 12,000 in Geary County. That figure does not include an estimated 55,000 military personnel, families and civilians at Fort Riley that have a nearly $2 billion impact annually on business in the area as well as being a source for recruiting disciplined and highly efficient employees. Junction City is included in the Manhattan Metropolitan Statistical Area, adding an additional 100,000 to the workforce pool.

Junction City seeks candidates with initiative, creativity and a proven track-record of retaining, expanding and recruiting businesses. The ideal candidate is a people-person adept at building long- term relationships and continuing the growth of the area.

High energy, enthusiasm and passion are required for this position. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills, the ability to think and act strategically, and have the talent to tactfully negotiate and “close the deal” with prospective companies. A demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders including city and county officials, regional partners, brokers, developers, and local business owners is required.

A bachelor’s degree in economics or a related field and three to five years of progressively responsible experience in economic development is required. Economic development certification CecD or EDFP is preferred. The position reports to the Chamber of Commerce President/CEO.

Compensation includes a competitive wage package commensurate with experience. Residency in Geary County is required within 90 days of start date. Position requires occasional overnight travel and evening or weekend activities. Submit résumé, letter of introduction, contact information and five professional references to the:
